FAQ's

Any travel tips?

Before you leave

  • Watch the weather so that you know how to pack.

  • Check out Telluride/Mountain Village’s Tourism websites.

  • Check road conditions if you plan on flying into an airport other than Telluride and you plan on renting a car.
         Locally call (970)249-9363
         Toll free call (877)315-7623

  • Reconfirm your reservations with the airlines, hotels, and rental car companies 24hours before you depart.

  • Check to be sure your driver’s license has not expired. This can cause delays at the airport and make for some unnecessary screening at security check points.

Packing Tips

Be sure you have the following in your carry on luggage

  • Identification (Valid US identification).
  • Insurance cards (Both medical and automobile).
  • Credit cards and cash.
  • Airline tickets.
  • Itinerary with confirmation numbers and addresses where you will be staying.
  • Your medications.
  • Toiletries and clothes for one day.

If you have a camera and are worried about the film, carry it with you and have the TSA manually check it for you at the security check point.

If you have lighters, leave them at home.  As of August of this year, the FAA banned all lighters in either checked or carry-on luggage.

Airline Tips

  • Size and weight restrictions are strictly enforced in all the airports on the Western Slope of Colorado due to the size of the airplanes.  You can only have 2 checked bags and 1 carry-on bag.  Skis and boots count as 1 bag.

  • Your checked bag cannot exceed 50lbs in weight.  The airlines will charge you anywhere from $25 to $75 for overweight bags and they can leave them off the plane if the flight becomes weight restricted.

  • Carry-on limitations are 40 lbs and 14” high, 21” wide, and 8” deep.

  • Be sure to carry an extra set of clothes as well as needed medications and toiletries in your carry-on because there is a 30% chance that your checked bag will not make it with you into your final destination.  The reasons for this could be because your connection time was too short or your flight coming in was weight restricted or simply because your skis and luggage could not fit into the luggage hold.  I recommend that you ship your skis, boots, and ski clothes ahead of time.  This will save you from added frustration and allow you to enjoy your vacation.

  • If you are changing airlines in your trip, be sure your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

Altitude Sickness

  • Altitude sickness strikes the majority of visitors to Telluride. Check with your physician on medication you can take before you arrive to ease the sickness.

  • An over-the-counter medication you can take to help ease altitude sickness is Diamox. (Azetazolamide)

  • It is also recommended that you drink as much water as you can and keep hydrated once you arrive.

  • If you have problems when you arrive, call 911 for emergencies or you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Peter Hackett at the Telluride Medical Center. He is the physician who specialized in High Altitude Medicine. It is recommended that you call him ahead of time for more precautions that can be taken. Dr. Peter Hackett (970)728-3848.
